Located an hour's drive from the economic capital Abidjan, or Grand-Bassam was the Ivorian capital of 1893 at 1899 with a rich artistic heritage, cultural and traditional where you can find architectural remains.
Today the city has been listed as a UNESCO heritage site since 1is July 2012, real tourist town, it also attracts Ivorian creators from various backgrounds who drop off their suitcases there to enjoy the enchanting charm of this city by the sea..
You will find sand there, coconut trees, the lagoon facing the sea as well as the famous and unmissable festival of the city called Abissa, this celebration of rejoicing and reunion is the celebration of the new year which takes place at the end of October / beginning of November in Nzima country.
Unlike other cities sharing the colonial past, Grand-Bassam has retained part of its architecture of yesteryear.
You have the old governor's palace built in 1893 for the first governor of the time and who today, houses the national costume museum. You will also find one of the historical monuments of the city which is the Lighthouse of Grand-Bassam which was one of the first which served as orientation for the boats until 1951, this lighthouse is located in the district of the same name (Lighthouse district).
The first school of Ivory Coast which was ruled by settlers, was created in this city as well as in 1905, the first hospital center welcoming patients from all regions.
You also have the Ganamet house with more 100 ans d’existence, was the first shopping mall in the country, to obtain valuables such as jewelry, the shoes, bags and more.
In the French district, you will see several colonial villas unfortunately abandoned.
On the other side of the lagoon, you have the district of Moossou inhabited by fishermen where you can enjoy the lagoon, and go fishing.
Grand Bassam is also culinary diversity with local food, fancy restaurants like the Young restau lounge with its pleasant setting and very relaxed atmosphere located in the Sinzala district and the Coco grill with its artistic and tropical touch is located in the France district in front of the urban dispensary and you also have hotel complexes displaying European and African food.
You will also find there hotels along the beaches, guest houses, for all types of budget and standing as well as magnificent furnished villas with all the conveniences like those located on the edge of the modest lake (Click here) via the old road linking Bassam to Abidjan.
Grand-Bassam, it is also a beautiful political story marked by the famous march of these brave women in 1943 for freedom and justice. An unfailing determination that will lead to the release of prisoners unjustly imprisoned several months later.
The bridge connecting the France district to the city was baptized "Pont de la Victoire" in their honor.
